The following article is produced by Tex-Air Filters, a filter manufacturer in Texas. It is the best I have seen to provide an understanding of how filters work. The article is well researched and absolutely correct. However, it does not adequately address air handling processes, accumulation or disposal. 

A Better Alternative

No matter how a HEPA filter works to capture particles and aerosols, it has to accumulate them on the fibers of the filter. The tighter the mesh and the higher the population of particles, the faster the filter will plug up and the higher the pressure drop. Replacement costs are high and business and home owners do not get around to changing them at proper intervals. Filtration is good for the manufacturer of air filters but not so good for the customer.

1. Accumulation fills the fiber openings and reduces the air flow through the filter.

2. The pathogen population is increased as they are concentrated and accumulated on the filter media. 

3. The viruses and bacteria are not disposed of until the filter is changed, a dreaded, unsanitary and dirty operation.

DMV advantage

DMV accumulates the bacteria, viruses and also allergens by incapsulating them in water. It does not need a filter. The viruses are transmitted through the air on the backs of bacteria in aerosols emitted by human expectoration. (coughing, sneezing or even breathing). If they are dry and not already carried in an aerosol, they are wetted by impaction and captured in the low pressure zones of the DMV.

1.The airborne particles and aerosols are vacuumed by induced draft from all of the occupied space into the inlet of the DMV.

2. It is a simple transition of the vacuumed particles to water by the DMV multiple venturi zones, no matter how small, if they are already incapsulated in the aerosols.

3. The aerosols containing the bad particles associate and remain in the water that is accumulated in the DMV water tank.

4. The water is periodically and automatically drained away to the sanitation plant where the pathogens are killed and disposed of.

5. The virus and bacteria free air is returned to the occupied space it was taken from. This step is very important because the returned air, unlike outside air, is pathogen free.

NOTE: An Ultraviolet water treatment module is used at the drain of the DMV on the units made for medical applications to provide immediate sanitation.

Forced draft air handling:

When air is being forced into a room airspace, the airborne particles and aerosols are being chased into every corner of the room. The air is being returned by pressure to and through a single centrally located vent back to the air handler in the heating and air furnace or air conditioner. Forced draft works very well for heating or cooling airspace because it it is desired to force the warm or cool air to go everywhere in the room.

Induced draft air handling:

When air is vacuumed from an airspace the reduced pressure, caused by the vacuum, is pulling the airborne particles and aerosols away from the corners of the room and out of the room space to the suction of the vacuum. Particles and aerosols are not being forced to spread and fill the room like forced draft but are drawn to a central location at the suction inlet of the vacuum.
